Since different users have different favorite teams and many sports preferences, it’s very important to have a user to pick and choose their specific favorite teams via a list or search so the mobile app’s algorithm can populate a watch / schedule list rapidly on the homepage.
Also an easy way to view upcoming schedules which I will explain in major task 2.
Problem
When launching Watch ESPN app, the home / featured screen features what show or live or re-aired games that are available to stream within only an hour timeframe. To view or search upcoming streams, the user has to either press the Sport or Channel screens to find specific games that are going to be streamed on future dates.
On the Sport screen, the user can choose a specific sport criteria ( for example Basketball ) but since ESPN has many different channels that live streams college or NBA games ( ESPN 1,2,3,U SEC, ACC ) the app list them onto one very long scrolling page featuring all the channels and game times. In order for a user to navigate to a different dates, they have to click on “ Load More Events “ to continue the schedule list and keeps scrolling down until the next day, 2 or 3 schedule days list are populated. It’s a very tedious and time wasting to find upcoming games by continuously keep scrolling down.
On the Channel screen, the user can select a specific channel ( ESPN 1,2,3 etc.. ) and the user can watch a show or game that is streaming live via the player on the top of the screen and scroll down to view upcoming schedule list. But the user can only view upcoming games in a 12 hour schedule, not specifically dates.
The Search screen is more organize because if the user searches for his favorite team ( for example Golden State Warriors ) the schedule list is much shorter due to the a more specific search that populates only games by Golden State Warriors within 2 channels ( ESPN 1 & 3 ). The user still has to scroll down though for future upcoming games lets say a month or 2 from the date of search.
But inputting the keyword Basketball on the search field on the search screen display all the upcoming games from all of ESPN’s channels and the user has to infinitely scroll down again until the list for today’s date is done and has to press “ Load More Results “ to view more list for the next day and so on.
Solution
The Watch ESPN App will still retain the main navigation buttons which are Featured, Sport, Channel but the search, main menu / settings will be move on the top row of the app.
The homepage of the app will feature live or replay games or shows based on the user profiles. 4 live video streams will be available to play.
When the user scrolls down past the 4 live now shows then the up – down sliding / scrolling calendar row will be then featured. The user can see today’s live stream schedule list with icons / logos, then swipe down to see then next day and future dates or keep scrolling down. The User will be able to view all the games and shows schedule list from all of ESPN’s channels. But to the right that date button, there will be a row / panel that are scrollable left to right of subcategory filter buttons / icons of
Clicking on any of those icons will re-populate and organize the list based on the user’s preferences form his profile, for example
Unfortunately Watch ESPN apps games schedule list, there’s no feature where a user can add a reminder app notifications to watch the game or show. It’s just a waste of time doing all that meticulous searching and navigating without any purpose or reward to the user.
My solution is when the user is searching for upcoming shows to watch, there will be a remind me button that will give a notification to the user when his bookmarked games / shows will be streaming available to stream on the app a day or hours / time in advanced and the moment to game / show time is about to stream. Then the user will open the app and his schedule games or show will be featured on the Live now video players on the homepage when the app is launched.
